Little Monsters- Intestinal Parasites for Dogs

For those who have a dog as a pet, their health and happiness are paramount. We make sure their food is healthy, have a comfortable place to sleep, and have all the play time they can handle. But some elements can arise that may dampen your dog’s happiness, and even lead to serious health issues in your dog. One of the apparent plagues that can strike our pets are the invasions of many different kinds of parasites that may want to turn your dog’s intestines into their house.  Here is what you should look out for, the symptoms and ways of preventing such a thing from happening.

How they Get Intestinal Parasites

There are a couple of ways your dog can contract these little monsters, but it usually occurs when a dog ingests the parasite’s eggs or spores in contaminated water, soil, food, or feces. The ingestion of tapeworm contaminated fleas can lead to that growing in your dog’s system. The puppies can even become infected by such parasites from their mother, either in utero or from nursing.

Intestinal Parasite symptoms

It can often be hard to detect such a terrible thing from happening, but there are some tell-tale signs of intestinal parasites inhabiting your canine:

  • Scooting
  • Vomiting
  • Diarrhea
  • A distended abdomen
  • Weight loss
  • Occasionally coughing

You can invest in monthly heartworm medications that also contain treatments for intestinal parasites. If you do not already have your dog on a de-wormer routine, you should consider taking your dog to the veterinarian to find out how you can better protect your pets and family from these insidious creatures. Also, have your pet checked out by your vet before bringing them back into your household, so they can let you know it is safe to expose your other pets and family members to the dog you are worried about.
